Axelson Access presents: Fundraising and Equity: What Needs to Change?

Join us for an Axelson Access webinar on May 25th which asks: how does fundraising need to change to advance equity? This session will gather President of the Alford Group Brenda Asare, the Paula Varner Professor of Public Administration Dr. Angela Eikenberry, Director of the Axelson Center Dr. Pier Rogers, and Development Director at Alternatives Monica George for an operational and contextual conversation on fundraising practices and the larger conversation on equity and diversity. Interested in diving deeper on a range of questions, such as:

  • 1. What are the good and helpful trends within fundraising practices?
  • 2. What does equity-centered philanthropy involve?
  • 3. What does the growing equity conversation mean for givers, fundraising professionals, governing boards, foundations, communities themselves?
  • 4. What does the anti-CRT movement mean for DEI and fundraising?

Moderator and panelists: Pier C. Rogers, Brenda Asare, Angela M. Eikenberry, Monica George

Pier C. Rogers, PhD, (moderator) is Director of the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management at North Park University. She has led the Center to expand programming, reach new audiences, and solidify its role as the premier nonprofit management professional education center in the Chicago metro area. She also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in nonprofit management in the School of Business and Nonprofit Management.

Dr. Rogers has held academic positions as well as nonprofit leadership roles including Associate Executive Director of the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers; Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Management at the New School University in New York City; Associate Research Scholar and Lecturer at Yale University’s Divinity School and Program on Non-Profit Organizations (PONPO). Other management positions Dr. Rogers has held include at United Way of Massachusetts Bay, at Associated Black Charities in NYC, and at New York University. Dr. Rogers currently serves as Board President of ARNOVA (the international nonprofit research association), where in 2009 she co-founded the “Diversity Scholars and Leaders Professional Development Workshop”, which serves doctoral students of color from all over the world whose studies focus on the nonprofit sector. She is also a member of the “Willie’s Warriors Advisory Board” at the Chicago Foundation for Women, and the Diversity Advisory Board at UCAN. She most recently stepped down from her role as chair of the Strategic Communications Committee of the Wellesley College Alumnae Association.

Brenda Asare is the President & CEO of Alford Group, a 43 year consultancy partnering with the nonprofit community to accelerate their impact. Brenda brings nearly 30 years of management and cross-sector experience and has assisted clients in raising over $2 billion, focusing on campaign execution, strategic planning, corporate partnerships, board leadership development and organizational design. Additionally, Brenda is 1st Vice Chair of the Giving Institute and serves as a board member for numerous philanthropic organizations. Brenda is a frequent speaker on the intersection of DEI and philanthropy and has mentored many talented development professionals. In 2019, Brenda was recognized as Crain’s Notable Minorities in Consulting for her remarkable work in the nonprofit sector and in 2020 as Crain’s Notable Black Leaders & Executives.

 

Angela M. Eikenberry is D.B. and Paula Varner Professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Her research focuses on the social, economic, and political roles of philanthropy and nonprofit and voluntary organizations in democratic governance. She is recipient of the UNO Award for Distinguished Research or Creative Activity and a Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration. In recent years, she co-edited a textbook, Reframing Nonprofit Management: Democracy, Inclusion, and Social Change (Melvin & Leigh, 2018), and served as President of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA).

 

 

Monica George is the Managing Director at Alternatives and oversees all fundraising, marketing, and communications the organization. Prior to her work with Alternatives, Monica worked as grants manager at Cabrini Green Legal Aid, supporting individuals negatively impacted by the criminal justice system, and as a development consultant for Chicago United for Equity, a people-led movement activating Chicago schools, neighborhoods, and government to end racial inequity. Monica has 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and is an earnest advocate for community-centric fundraising. Monica is a member of Chicago Women in Philanthropy, Impact Grants Chicago, the Chicago Committee for Human Rights Watch, and Partners in Health. 

Monica has a BA and BM (Music Composition) from Oberlin College and Conservatory and a certificate in Nonprofit Management from North Park University Graduate School. She lives with her husband, daughter, and two dogs in Edgewater
